Hambisa Tirone Isoniwe

Hambisa Tirone Isoniwe, 44, known to those around her as Bonnie, is a vibrant woman whose warmth and personality light up every room she enters.

Bonnie lives and works in Coffee Bay, where she is part of the growing tourism industry in the area. Working in catering at one of the local restaurants, she plays an important role behind the scenes in the kitchen, helping serve both her community and the many visitors who pass through this beautiful part of the Eastern Cape.

When Bonnie began to lose sight in one eye, her ability to work and support herself was suddenly under threat. Thankfully, because she was close to the Grace Vision team and able to access help quickly, intervention came before that loss of vision could have even wider consequences. She had been blind in one eye for less than a year.

For many people in similar circumstances, that is not the reality. Delayed access to care often means vision loss continues for far longer before treatment becomes possible. Bonnie’s story is a reminder of how important early intervention can be.

This weekend, through the support of Blind Loyalty and the amazing work of Amanda Cromhout, Bonnie received the surgery she needed.

Bonnie carries a joy that is hard to miss. Her smile lights up a room, and her gratitude for the help she received was clear for everyone to see. Stories like hers remind us why timely intervention matters so deeply.

At Grace Vision, helping people receive care before vision loss costs them their livelihood is so important. When sight is restored early, the impact reaches far beyond one person. It helps protect independence, preserve employment, and reduce the ripple effects that so often affect entire families.

Because sometimes restoring sight means protecting a future before it is lost.

Thabo Mzinani

Thabo Mzinani, 35, is a builder by trade and a man who works hard to provide for his family.

In 2025, Thabo began losing sight in his left eye, and before long it started affecting every part of his work. In construction, clear vision is not a luxury. It is essential. He spoke about how difficult it had become to notice obstacles around him, making his work not only harder, but also more dangerous.

For a builder, precision matters. Straight lines, level surfaces, and careful alignment are part of the job. Thabo shared how trying to keep things straight and properly aligned became a real struggle with sight in only one eye. The work he had always known and relied on was becoming harder to do with confidence.

This weekend, through the support of Blind Loyalty and the amazing work of Amanda Cromhout, Thabo received the surgery he needed.

On the day his patch came off, his relief and joy were clear to everyone around him. Many Xhosa men carry themselves with quiet strength, often reserved and stoic, and in moments like these, a smile can say more than words ever could. Thabo’s smile said it all.

Now, Thabo can return home and back to work with renewed confidence. The livelihood that had once been threatened by failing sight is secure once again. A hardworking man can move forward with the dignity and assurance of knowing he is once again able to do what he does best.

Because sometimes restoring sight means securing far more than vision alone.

Owethu hasn’t been able to see properly for the past few years. He required a corneal transplant in his left eye. At the age of 17, the timing was critical so he can enter his last year of schooling with improved sight to help him achieve academically. His mother was extremely concerned about how he can progress at school with such impaired vision. Owethu received his corneal transplant and the next day sat an exam at school, with a smile on his face. He also dreams of playing soccer with friends and his mother dreams of Owethu’s ability to work and play hard at school and to resume a normal life ahead of him.

Roland Duma

15 year old Roland Duma came to Blind loyalty at the end of 2023 requiring corneal cross-linking procedures on both eyes (to avoid corneal transplants). Roland’s school work was suffering as he couldn’t see the school board and barely could see his workbook pages. His dream was to play football with his friends and to work on graphic design, when he can see again.

In November 2024, Roland’s letter of thanks says:

“I hope one day that I have the opportunity to pay it forward and make a difference in someone else’s life just as you have done for me. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done for me. Your kindness has truly touched my life in a meaningful way.”
